Thrive Boldly: Oxytocin & Synchrony: The Science of Connection and Healing

Updated: Apr 10

In her insightful lecture, The Biology of Love, Ruth Feldman explores the powerful role of oxytocin in human connection. Often called the "love hormone," oxytocin is central to synchronizing the three brains—head, heart, and stomach. It allows us to feel deeply connected, fostering empathy, trust, and intimacy. When our oxytocin systems are in balance, we experience deep feelings of attachment and emotional security. However, disruptions to oxytocin—such as stress, trauma, or disconnection—can lead to feelings of fear, anxiety, or even prejudice.

One of the most fascinating aspects of oxytocin is its role in brain-to-brain synchrony. When two people are deeply connected—whether it's a parent and child, romantic partners, or even strangers who share a moment of genuine connection—oxytocin and synchrony help their brains align. This creates an emotional resonance that can heal, regulate stress, and even foster new bonds.

But how do we nurture and repair our oxytocin systems, especially when they’ve been disrupted? The key lies in restoring synchrony—through touch, eye contact, shared experiences, and nourishing food. Oxytocin is deeply connected to nonverbal signals, like synchronized breathing or gaze, which can be powerful tools for healing and connection.

So, how can we support our oxytocin system and create positive synchrony in our lives? Let's start with food! Here’s a recipe that draws on the principles of oxytocin, synchronization, and emotional nourishment.

Oxytocin-Boosting Recipe: Synchrony Sweet Potato & Avocado Toast

This recipe is designed to nourish the head, heart, and stomach brains—a perfect combination of healthy fats, complex carbohydrates, and grounding flavors that will leave you feeling calm, balanced, and connected.

Ingredients:

  • 2 slices whole-grain bread (rich in fiber to stabilize blood sugar for sustained energy)

  • 1 medium sweet potato (roasted, for its rich vitamin A and stress-reducing properties)

  • 1 ripe avocado (loaded with healthy fats to support brain function and emotional regulation)

  • 1 tbsp olive oil (for heart-healthy fats and to promote oxytocin release)

  • 1/4 tsp cinnamon (boosts brain activity and emotional calm)

  • 1 tbsp hemp seeds (rich in omega-3 fatty acids to support mental clarity and emotional stability)

  • Sea salt and pepper (to taste)

  • A few fresh mint leaves (optional, for added freshness and calming effect)

Instructions:

  1. Roast the Sweet Potato: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Wash and peel the sweet potato, then cut it into small cubes. Toss the cubes with olive oil, cinnamon, sea salt, and pepper. Roast on a baking sheet for 25-30 minutes, or until golden and tender.

  2. Prepare the Avocado: While the sweet potato is roasting, slice the avocado in half, remove the pit, and scoop out the flesh into a bowl. Mash it gently with a fork, adding a pinch of sea salt and pepper to taste. You can also add a squeeze of lemon or lime if you prefer a tangy kick.

  3. Toast the Bread: Toast the slices of whole-grain bread to your liking.

  4. Assemble the Toast: Spread a generous layer of mashed avocado on each slice of toast. Top with roasted sweet potatoes, sprinkle with hemp seeds, and finish with a few fresh mint leaves for a refreshing touch.

  5. Serve with Love: Enjoy this nourishing, hearty dish in a mindful, relaxed setting—whether alone or shared with someone you care about. Savor the flavors, feel the comfort, and let your body and mind synchronize.

How This Recipe Supports Oxytocin and Synchrony:

  • For Your Head Brain: The sweet potato and avocado are rich in vitamins and healthy fats, supporting brain health and emotional regulation. Cinnamon adds a calming touch, helping to balance blood sugar and promote mental clarity.

  • For Your Heart Brain: The act of preparing and sharing food fosters bonding, a key component of oxytocin release. When you enjoy this meal with a loved one, you're activating your heart brain by sharing nourishment and creating synchrony in your relationship.

  • For Your Stomach Brain: The healthy fats in avocado and omega-3s from hemp seeds promote gut health and emotional well-being. When your gut is nourished, it supports your overall mental and emotional balance.

How to Activate Oxytocin and Synchrony:

  • Touch and Presence: If possible, share this meal with a loved one. Touch, eye contact, and synchronized actions—like sharing a meal—release oxytocin and deepen emotional bonds.

  • Mindful Eating: Take time to savor each bite. Engage fully in the experience, noticing the textures, flavors, and the comfort the food provides. This mindfulness enhances the head brain’s ability to regulate emotions and promotes a sense of calm.

  • Gaze Synchrony: Share a moment of eye contact during the meal. Simple acts like locking eyes while conversing or just being present can activate synchrony between you and your dining companion, releasing oxytocin and fostering connection.

Drink Pairing:

Golden Milk (Turmeric Latte)This soothing, anti-inflammatory drink made with turmeric, coconut milk, and a hint of black pepper perfectly complements the nourishing aspects of your meal. It’s grounding, calming, and can enhance your body’s natural production of oxytocin and serotonin, promoting emotional balance and relaxation.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup coconut milk (or any milk alternative)

  • 1/2 tsp ground turmeric

  • 1/4 tsp ground cinnamon

  • A pinch of black pepper

  • 1/2 tsp honey or maple syrup (optional)

  • A dash of vanilla extract (optional)

Instructions:

  1. In a small saucepan, combine the milk, turmeric, cinnamon, black pepper, and sweetener (if using).

  2. Warm over medium heat until hot but not boiling.

  3. Stir well and serve with a sprinkle of cinnamon on top.

Why It Pairs Well:

Turmeric is known for its anti-inflammatory properties, and it also helps regulate mood. The gentle warmth of golden milk promotes relaxation and aids digestion, complementing the grounding effect of the sweet potato and avocado toast. It’s a perfect pairing for your body and mind, enhancing the oxytocin release while soothing the digestive and emotional systems.

Mantra Pairing:

Mantra: "I am connected. I am present. I am love."

Music Pairing:

Music Playlist: "Chill Vibes for Connection"

A calming playlist designed to encourage synchrony and a peaceful atmosphere. The music should have gentle rhythms, minimalistic instrumentation, and melodies that evoke a sense of connection and flow. Look for artists like Ludovico Einaudi, Ólafur Arnalds, or Sigur Rós for a soothing experience.

Alternatively, if you prefer nature-inspired music, try rainforest sounds or ocean waves mixed with soft piano, providing a sense of grounding and calming energy to support oxytocin production.

Why It Pairs Well:

Soft, ambient music encourages brain synchronization and can promote feelings of safety and relaxation. The right music encourages the parasympathetic nervous system, enhancing your body's ability to connect deeply with the meal and those around you. It creates a harmonious environment, allowing the body to fully absorb the nurturing effects of the meal.

By focusing on oxytocin and synchrony, we can reconnect with others, heal emotional wounds, and strengthen the bonds that help us navigate the challenges of life. Whether through physical presence, shared meals, or emotional support, creating these connections is essential for nurturing the three brains and fostering resilience.
